Description

Finally! I found the time to finish the third illustration for my childrens book project 'Hey Day'.

Some of you might have seen the sketch for this. I included it with the second illustration (see gallery).
Arenhaus gave me some constructive advice which I followed, so thanks for that man.

Acrylics and colored pencils, took me about two working weeks all together. I only used references for the colors and feathers of the jay-bird.
Enjoy!

PS!!! Please check the added 'next sketch'. I'd like some comments before I start painting it. Pretty please?

Play the Eurasien jay sound in the background to make it come alive!

Wow Arne! This is certainly a diversion from your usual style! Love the linework! The richness of colours and shades add to the warmth to produce a well finished and compact scene. The textures are outstanding. There's a lot of visual information here that makes for an interesting and extremely attractive pic.

Funny too! :p

Well done, for a really great picture!

I was waiting for this one...Wonderfull choice of colors for the jay bird...The pointy ears really add to the characteristic of the whole painting.Makes the squirrels look more dangerous......Very fine piece...Arne! +8/8

See you on another "Hey Day".....

quite funny idea

little crit: the bird could need some more contrast/shadows/lighting compared with all the other objects

 04/26/05 @703

Hey there R2oonator.

Really like the vivid colours in this one! Certainly fits for the childrens book. Well done. My only gripe is probably the pink feathers on the bird, not sure if they fit in well with the rest of the picture. Allthough thats probably just down to taste...i hate pink! :) hehe. Thumbs up to you man!!!

Love it! Great work. This will really speak to children.

And for the people who give crits on the color: This is a Eurasian Jaybird (latin name: garrulus glandarius). And they are in fact pink. :)

Indeed PashiPa, well seen, it's a Eurasian jaybird. The Blue Jay is American, just like Kittykat. And those Americans can't see beyond their island They think a Dutch person is from Germany Silly people.

You are good at illustrations, vibrant colours, nice composition and most importantly it is not boring :) Very important for a children's book! I will show this to my 4 y o sister tomorrow and ask what she thinks about it :)

The new sketch is cool, cute duck, nice perspective, I like the fish in the middle - good.

EDIT: maybe you could make the fish in different sizes to add a little bit more depth for the underwater world, sort of that they re not swimming in a a line, but rather one after another, one closer ot the viewer, the other a bit further.. but dont mess up the composition :p And maybe add some odd flying bird in the sky in the distance.... but it is cool anyway :)

That's what I'm talking about! The Master of explosive color strikes again. This couldn't emulate the joy of living any more than it does, to quibble with species identification is to miss out on the emotional investment entirely. Spectacular as always, and the very essence of why we create in the first place :)

weird thing: i had a dream about a bird just like this one the day before i saw your pic for the first time...

anyhoo, nice composition, great colours and easily the best rendering of an angry squirrel i've seen today. nothing else comes even close.

if i did have a criticism, it would be that the bird is a little flat: there's no shading round the edges as there is on the sqirrels and tree trunk...plus the tail is getting a little lost in amongst the leaves at the top. but i'm just being picky...;)
